If you keep kosher you’re adhering to a diet that has a 3,000+-year old tradition. Over the last few years, one of the more popular diets emulates an eating plan tens of thousands of years old.
It’s called the ‘Paleo Diet,’ and in case you’re not familiar with its philosophy, here are the commandments of the Paleo Diet:
- Eat no grains (wheat, rice, couscous, bulgur, spelt, rye, etc.)
- Eat no legumes (beans, when not fermented contain phytates, which interfere with nutrient absorption)
- Eat no grain-fed meat (only grass-fed, pasture-raised meats are allowed, preferably wild game)
- Eat no pasteurized dairy products
- Eat no foods that have added sugars; this eliminates pretty much everything besides fruit and unpasteurized milk
The theory of the Paleo diet is that homo sapiens--and Neanderthals--subsisted on foods that were only hunted or scavenged for. The Paleo diet was, what modern humans consider, a truly organic, locally-sourced, all-natural eating plan.
The life span of Paleolithic era hunters may have been decades lower than that of our contemporaries but the Paleo diet posits that this diet dictate greatly reduces the chances of developing chronic diseases associated with poor dietary habits.
Is Keeping Kosher and Paleo Possible?
While some Jews might think the Paleo diet is meshugganah--What, no bagels? Fuhgettaboutit!--the Miracle Noodle team believes it’s a healthy eating plan. With rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases showing no signs of abating, eliminating foods (such as most grains) that promote systemic inflammation in the body is one of two major ways to reverse the troubling trend (along with regular exercise).
You already eat glatt kosher, so you may as well eat the most sustainably- and humanely-raised kosher meat, which is why the Miracle Noodle team recommends KOL Foods, which was created in 2007, and to date, remains the only kosher source of grass-fed beef (cows’ four stomachs are meant to chew grass, not eat grains).
You can even eat kosher desserts and still be on a Paleo-friendly diet. Elana Amsterdam of elanaspantry.com features several recipes on her website that use almond flour instead of wheat or white flour. Almond flour is high in protein and fiber and barely registers a blip on the glycemic index, meaning it won’t perilously raise your blood sugar levels.
Kosher- and Paleo-Friendly Desserts with Miracle Noodle
Both Miracle Noodle and Miracle Rice (yes, we have a zero-calorie, all-natural rice alternative as well!) are great substitutes for traditional kosher desserts such as Miracle Noodle Kugel and Miracle Rice Pudding. Miracle Noodle and Miracle Rice are both OU-kosher certified. Both do not affect blood sugar levels, so they are Paleo-friendly.
