What to do When You Have Low Blood Sugar

It's a hot, sultry day. But you want to get some exercise. So you walk a neighborhood trail that has a very steep section. You're huffing and puffing and sweating, grateful for the fresh air and spiritual well-being of sauntering in the great outdoors.

But when you crest the steep hill, you become weak and you feel like you're going to faint. You've been in this situation plenty of times before, so it doesn't come as a surprise. The first time this happened though, you were scared. 

Now, because you have an insulin pump and/or a glucometer, you're at least prepared for this situation. But in a way, it's no less scary than the first time you remember the physiological reaction of dangerously low blood sugar levels and insufficient insulin to carry the blood sugar to the cells. 

You still perhaps feel like at best it's an annoying thing you have to put up with in this lifetime; at worst, it can be something that really can get you down, having to frequently monitor your levels and potentially experiencing energy fluctuations and mood swings because of diabetes. 

With a fainting spell perilously close at hand, you lie down on your back, on the dirty trail; it beats passing out and falling down hard. Luckily, your friend who knows your medical situation well, has an ice cold soda or juice in a backpack. 

Your friend helps you take a few sips. The sugar almost instantly brings you back to life. You feel more grounded, actually, you feel above grounded. When you have diabetes and suffer from well below blood sugar levels, grounded, as you've just experienced, can literally mean being knocked down on your butt. 

But the soda is helping you feel better. 

Your friend, who considers him/herself somewhat of a home-schooled nutrition expert also has a pack of mixed nuts and raisins. Your friend tells you that you should get some food in you and hands you the mixed nuts. "It's instant energy," your well-meaning friend says. 

The overwhelming amount of nutrition advice out there equates sugar with the devil. Sugar is pro-inflammatory, sugar leads to disease, sugar causes weight gain. Your hiking buddy understands this well and tells you that all that sugar in the can of soda is bad for you. 

"The soda has 35 grams per serving and if you drink the whole can quickly that sugar has nowhere to go but get stored by the liver as body fat," your friend tells you. 

And your friend would be right. It's best not to guzzle the whole can of soda or juice in one sitting. A few sips should be all it takes to get your blood sugar levels back to normal; of course you'll have to test to verify. 

But where your friend would be wrong is telling you to eat the mixed nuts. Nuts have fat. Fat slows down the release of insulin; your blood sugar levels won't rise as quickly and you'll still feel out of it. 

Go for the raisins if they're in the mixed nuts, but skip the nuts when your blood sugar level is low. Wait until your blood sugar levels have stabilized for a little while before you eat the fat. 

It's always wise to limit added sugars in the diet. But when your blood sugar levels are well below normal, it could be just what the doctor ordered.

Recipe for White Tea Matcha Smoothie

It's tempting to want to drink 2 or 3 cups of coffee in the morning to get you going. But even though coffee contains no fat or carbs, excess coffee can lead to weight gain.

Here's the short explanation how: caffeine stimulates the adrenals, two almond shaped glands that rest on your kidneys. The adrenal glands release cortisol, the so-called 'stress hormone.' Continually asking the adrenals to release cortisol eventually makes your adrenals struggle to deal with stress and consequently messes up your metabolism, potentially leading to weight gain. 

So take it easy on the coffee. 

Now that we have that lecture out of the way, let' give you a simple recipe for a morning smoothie that should give you some long-lasting energy and help with weight loss. It won't feel like a slap in your face zinger like drinking 2 cups of coffee, but remember, what goes up must go down; better to go through each day with steady energy so you won't succumb to tempting cravings.

What's the Best Protein Powders for Weight Loss?

To Whey or Not to Whey....that is the question, when it comes to protein powder.
 
Then, there's also egg white, hemp, soy, rice, pea, and even beef protein powder. 
 
So how do you know which protein powder is the best?
 
Before answering that question, let it be known that 'drinking' your breakfast is an easy and healthy way to lose weight. 
 
Instead of eating a several hundred calorie breakfast of potatoes, bacon and eggs and toast, smoothies or health shakes are a low-calorie nutrient dense option. 
 
The one golden rule for weight loss, though, when it comes to smoothies is not to get duped into thinking fruit is good for you. 
 
Fruit, in moderation, say a handful of blueberries or half an apple, or one slightly ripe small banana, not all of them combined, is healthy because fruit is loaded with antioxidants. But fruit contains fructose, which does raise blood sugar levels. Elevated blood sugar levels can cause a sluggish liver, which can contribute to weight loss. 
 
Got that? In other words, if you're at a buffet, don't load your plate with a heaping serving of fruits, thinking that's healthy for you. Lots and lots of fruit may have more antioxidants than loading your plate with bacon, but you're not doing yourself any good. 
 
So limit your morning breakfast drink to one or two servings of fruit at most. 
 
And before we add protein (this is a culinary cliff hanger, huh?) to the smoothie, let's add some dietary fat. 
 
Even though you're trying to lose weight, fat is important because it helps keep you full, among other very important biological functions that dietary fat performs. Feeling full eliminates cravings for sugary foods and quick-burning carbohydrates. 
 
Organic nut or seed butters (one spoonful) is plenty of natural fat. Or a squirt of olive oil or flaxseed oil. 
 
So we've got our natural fat and our little bit of fruit for sweetness and antioxidants...now it's time for some muscle-building protein. 
 
If you're allergic to lactose, do not buy a whey protein powder in concentrated form; do however, feel free to use a whey isolate, which eliminates almost all the lactose. 
 
Whey protein is perhaps the most commercially popular form of protein powder and therefore most affordable. For those who are not at all allergic to milk protein, the other form besides whey that comes from cow's milk is casein protein. 
 
Egg white protein is perhaps the most biologically available, meaning that your body can digest the egg protein better than other sources. 
 
Some people complain of whey protein's bulky post-digestion feeling and ensuing chalky-dry mouth. 
 
For vegans, the best sources of protein are either pea protein or rice protein. Some commercial vegan protein powder manufacturers combine both pea and rice together. Both forms of protein are also easily digestible. They may not have the same muscle-building properties of whey or egg white but if you're a strict vegetarian or vegan and don't want to use animal-derived sources, pea or rice is the way to go. New Research Offers Positive Diabetes News

Perhaps you're familiar with the widely publicized report published in 2010 by the Centers for Disease Control, which predicts, by the year 2050, one-third of U.S. adults will have diabetes and even more will be pre-diabetic.

It would seem implausible for any good news about diabetes statistics to manifest considering such dire predictions. 

Well, good news is here, despite the gloomy forecast: rates of debilitating complications from heart attacks and strokes are on the decline. 

A U.S. study, in fact, says that over the last two decades, heart attacks and strokes have been reduced by more than 60 percent.

Amputations and kidney failure stemming from diabetes complications is also on the decline. 

What's the reason for the decline despite the skyrocketing incidence? Better screening, better pharmaceutical options and better health care. 

The CDC says that diabetes affects one in 10 adults and is the seventh-leading cause of death.

What researchers also now about diabetes is that you don't have to obese to have hardening of the arteries. Atherosclerosis, despite the common misconception that it only affects the significantly overweight, is more common in diabetics. 

Better-developed drugs are often credited with the reduction in complications from artery constriction. 

Once considered an early death sentence, diabetes, beginning back in the 1990s, was clinically proven to be a manageable disease, with the possibility of diabetics being able to control blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels at optimal levels. 

Health insurance companies also have expanded their coverage for diabetics and screening techniques drastically improved.

Eat Saturated Fat for Weight Loss?

Everyone knows saturated fat is bad for you, right? Every TV health expert or article that you've read probably has recommended avoiding fats that are bad for the heart such as trans- and saturated-fats.

But are saturated fats as bad for you as you think? Can some saturated fats even help with weight loss? 

Here's why saturated fats have had a bad rap for the past 60+ years:

As Americans started eating less natural foods--the necessity of getting food over to soldiers in Europe and beyond during World War II was one key factor in the food processing boom--the rates of heart disease started to climb. 

Some medical experts at the time concluded that it must be the butter, meat and cheeses, among other popular foods that have animal-derived fats (plant-based foods do not contain saturated fat, though they do have their own version of cholesterol) that are responsible for the increase in cardiovascular early mortality events as well as cancers. 

Some people even believe that the medical establishment was in collusion with the food science conglomerates. After all, what good is it if people eat whole, real foods and never get sick, then who would need a doctor. Hence, foods like margarine and artificial sweeteners became prominently featured on grocery store shelves. Advertising for these products flooded the airwaves. 

But whether you believe in this conspiracy or not is irrelevant; it's possible that food scientists really did have our best intention at heart, perhaps they believed margarine and shortening and vegetable oils were really better for our tickers.

What researchers of the mid-20th century, and even those of today who still believe saturated fat is generally 'bad,' failed to account for is the source of the saturated fat as well as case studies of societies whose diets featured a decent amount of saturated fat. 

Take an extreme example, of Inuits, the aboriginal inhabitants of Canada's far northern hinterlands. Subsisting on a huge amount of saturated fat from seal blubber and caribou meat, this population has no history of chronic disease, at least not until exposed to 'western' foods. 

Other tribes around the globe, when not introduced to processed foods, enjoyed vibrant health even with a high amount of saturated fat in the diet, sometimes way more than the 20 grams of saturated fat that the Food and Drug Administration advises people to limit their daily intake. 

Not to say that you should eat 200 grams of saturated fat a day but keep in mind that the Masai tribe of Kenya subsist, traditionally, on fats from their cattle (and the blood, but we won't get into that). 

Polynesian and Micronesian islanders eat lots of coconut, one of the few non-animal sources of food that has a relatively high amount of saturated fat. Other tropical oils like palm oil also account for these native peoples' health. 

If your saturated fat comes in the form of organic, free-range egg yolks and other pasture-raised animal products such as grass-fed beef, as well as coconut oil, you are eating a healthy form of saturated fat that can help with weight loss. 

Any form of healthy fats, also including, Omega-3 fatty acids from cold water oily fish like salmon (Omega-3's are polyunsaturated fats) and monounsaturated fats like avocado and olive oil help curb cravings. Fat is more nutrient-dense than carbohydrates. If you eat nothing but carbohydrates, the fuel burns too quickly without fat. That leads to more snacking and bingeing, which of course leads to weight gain. 

Saturated fat can be dangerous when oxidized, but that is true of any type of fats. But saturated fats oxidize much slower usually than non-saturated fats. Oxidization simply means that it has become spoiled, the molecular chemistry nuked beyond repair. 

Examples of saturated fats gone bad include frying egg yolks until they are drier than wallpaper, blackening or grilling meats to well-done, and cooking oils at very high temperatures. 

Do eat mostly a plant-based diet but when you do eat fish, poultry or red meat, only eat a small serving size from a free-range/open-pastured, and preferably organic source. You don't need to eat a lot of meat to reap the benefits of the nutritional value, including Omega-3 fatty acids that come from grass-fed sources. That's right, when you eat animal proteins that were raised in humane conditions, you are not only getting the protein and vitamins and minerals from the saturated fat, you're also getting the Omega-3 fatty acids from the grass the cow ate. Omega-3s have been proven to prevent obesity and other chronic diseases. 


So next time you hear the advice to limit your saturated fat intake, take it with a grain of salt, or grass-fed butter.

The Skinny on the HCG Diet

The Miracle Noodle Team receives emails from around the world everyday praising our shirataki noodles for helping with weight loss. And occasionally, Miracle Noodle devotees tell us they've done the HCG diet to help with successful weight loss. 

So it begs the question, what does the Miracle Noodle Team think of the HCG diet? Here's our answer....

To lose weight, would you get injected with, or take a supplement that comes from the hormone that's extracted from the urine of pregnant women?

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, aka HCG, has been medically administered since the 1950s, originally given to boys in India to reverse obvious traits of feminine qualities, such as enlarged breasts.

How does the diet work?

The hormone resets the body back to its natural healthy fat metabolizing capability and  "tells your body" to draw all of its energy only from abnormal and excess fat.

The cherry on top is that it leaves your muscle tissues intact. In other words, it burns fat without sacrificing muscle.

The hormone also help the brain control the hunger and appetite signal.

Common HCG advertisements claim weight loss successes of  one to three pounds per day!

Men also have HCG hormone, albeit on a lower level, and thus are also able to go on the HCG diet or get injections.

HCG supplements are most often sold in sublingual drops,  though most dieticians actually recommend people who want to go on an HCG diet be supervised by a doctor.

Doctors most likely would prescribe injections rather than advise patients to start self-administering drops or pills.

But injections are costlier. So more people are self-administering, and this has caused some controversy around the diet.

Why the controversy?

HCG, in its unregulated, non-medically supervised forms of pills or drops is unregulated. And many purveyors of the unregulated variety are on the Internet hoping to make good money.

If taking the supplements (or the regulated injections), your diet is limited to approximately 500 calories per day.

Some nutritionists, dieticians and doctors think that limiting 500 calories a day can deprive one of critical nutrients.

What do supporters of HCG say about the the low caloric restriction?

Due to the hormone's fat metabolism, not as much energy is required from food; the hormone actively suppresses food cravings.

Despite consuming just one-fourth of the recommended FDA daily guidelines of 2000 calories, those who take the HCG hormone claim that they have energy levels as if they were consuming 2000 calories.

The breakdown of fat provides the energy required by the body to function at a normal level.

How long does the HCG diet last?

For those wanting to lose 25 pounds, it will take about 25 days to achieve the desired weight loss.

"Tapioca" Pudding by Maria Emmerich Prep time: 2 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Total time: 12 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 6 large egg yolks ½ cup unsweetened almond milk ¼ cup Swerve (or erythritol and ¼ tsp stevia glycerite) ¼ cup butter or coconut oil, melted 1 tsp vanilla (or other extract like cherry!) 1 package Miracle Rice Cinnamon to taste OPTIONAL: add 2 TBS cocoa powder for chocolate tapioca! Instructions Whisk egg yolks, almond milk, natural sweetener and extract (and cocoa powder if using) in medium metal bowl to blend. Slowly mix in the melted butter so the eggs don't cook unevenly. Set bowl over saucepan of simmering water. Whisk mixture constantly and vigorously until thickened and instant-read thermometer inserted into mixture registers 140°F for 3 minutes, about 5 minutes total (or coats the back of a spoon). Remove mixture from over water. Stir in the Miracle Rice. Add cinnamon to desired taste. Serve warm or chilled. (If serving chilled, it can be prepared 1-3 days ahead and refrigerated. Knock! Knock! The Gluten Free Police is (Finally) Here! But Do The New Labeling Standards Go Far Enough?

Finally, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has established standardized gluten free labeling regulations. As of August 5, 2014, the FDA published a final rule for the "Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act" better known by what will surely be one of the least repeated acronyms in history, FALCPA. Wouldn't it have been better if the FDA came up with GAS: Gluten and Allergen Standards? Anyhow, what does the new gluten free labeling standards mean? And if you have Celiac Disease, does the regulation go far enough?

Before answering that question, if you purchased gluten free foods over the last few years, you may have not actually been eating a gluten free product. The FDA's lax enforcement of gluten free standards led many food marketers to slap on a gluten free label knowing that the Wild West days of Gluten Free foods would mean little if any chance of being penalized for fraudulently advertising a product as gluten free.

The FDA estimates that at least five percent of all foods labeled gluten free have at least 20 parts-per-million of gluten, the threshold that the FDA has decided to enforce.

But keep in mind that a product can still have less than 20 ppm of gluten and still give you food allergy symptoms. Why is that? Blame it on xanthan gum, which is used as a binding agent in many processed foods such as gluten free pretzels. Xanthan gum, and perhaps other binding agents, can produce gluten allergy symptoms even though it is gluten free. (Read this article on Celiac.org for more info on why xanthan gum can complicate your gluten allergy.)

And if you're eating out, does the new 'less than 20 ppm' rule apply to restaurants? The FDA says that restaurants SHOULD adhere to the same standards as food manufacturers, if the restaurant claims it is serving gluten free food, according to a law blog. The law blog suggests that the plaintiff for a consumer who ate at a fraudulently advertised gluten free restaurant will bring the weight of the FDA's ruling down on the restaurant in a court of law. So that's good news for consumers.

But what if you have Celiac's Disease? Does the 'Less than 20 PPM rule' go far enough?

Here's what the FDA's website says about this conundrum for extremely sensitive gluten free dieters:

"While the safety assessment results suggest that there may be some individuals with celiac disease who are highly sensitive to gluten exposure even at very low levels, the safety assessment, by its nature, may lead to a conservative, highly uncertain estimation of risk for these individuals. Given the various factors we have to consider and the data available to us, we decline to revise the rule to adopt a safety assessment-based approach at this time."

So, if you're very, very sensitive to gluten, caveat emptor! Let the buyer beware even if a product is labeled with the FDA's new labeling standards. Other things to keep in mind if you're extremely sensitive to gluten or dubious about the new labeling rules: oats are not prohibited from having the "gluten-free" label. The FDA encourages manufacturers “to indicate in their labeling that an oat-derived ingredient is present” if the food uses an oat-derived ingredient and the word “oat” does not appear in the ingredient list (FDA gives the example of beta glucans).

And another vital new labeling standard is that a label will be mis-categorized as gluten-free if the food contains 'wheat' in the ingredients. Always double check with reputable 3rd-party sources to make sure a product is truly gluten free!

Having Trouble Staying Low Carb? Ditch the Sugar!

Life's all about getting knocked down, dragged through the mud, spit in the face but ultimately picking yourself up, brushing off the muck and getting back in the saddle, head held high. You're only human, and it's inevitable that you might take a look at this image and be tempted to not only jump off the Low Carb Bandwagon, but puncture all four of its tires and never hop back on.

 But if you want to avoid chronic disease like type 2 diabetes or obesity, it's best if you do your very best to hop back on the healthy wagon. If you've been having a rough go at staying low-carb, it could very well be that your taste buds have been tickled too much with the sweet--and/or salty--stuff. Even having zero-sugar diet soda or no-calorie, sugar-free artificial sweeteners can really throw your taste buds out of whack.

When we habitually eat processed foods (anything that comes in a package, box or can) and drink anything else besides water and veggie juices, our taste buds can be thrown literally out of whack. If you're a busy office worker that doesn't have time to prepare healthy lunches and snacks, you might think you're still eating healthy, but restaurants don't hand you nutritional info along with your entree.

Many restaurants load their foods with either sugar or salt, often both, to enhance flavor. What this does is deaden your palate for natural-tasting foods. Here's an example: eating a bowl of broccoli, brown rice & chicken may sound super healthy, but when the foods are smeared, smothered, or drowned in a ginger-teriyaki sauce and sprinkled with a week's worth of sodium, your taste buds get assaulted. Unfortunately, instead of never wanting excess sugar or salt again and vowing never to eat this dish again, your taste buds undergo somewhat of a "Stockholm Syndrome," getting used to and ultimately craving more sugar or salt.

Despite your good intentions of eating healthy, it could be that eating out is resulting in the unintended consequences of having your taste buds hijacked by a sweet yet powerful foe, sugar. (And perhaps you're ignoring sugary sauces and other condiments in your own home.) If you think your taste buds have been hijacked by sugar and/or salt, here's what to do.... Ditch diet soda, all artificial sweeteners and even most natural ones such as agave or stevia. If you really want to correctly reset your palate, do this for 21 days, which is considered a threshold for habit formation.

Don't despair if you've become hijacked by sugar and salt. Food scientists have devised the perfect ratio of fat, sugar and salt so that you'll be craving more and more. Make no mistake about it: processed food is just as addictive as drugs. They stimulate and assault the pleasure center of our brains, disrupting and manipulating our taste for real, natural food! Even diet soda, although it has no sugar or calories, manipulates our pleasure center and stimulates our lust for more sugar. So does sugar-free candy.

This is why you must go 21 days without any soda, fruit juice, sugar-free snacks and tropical fruits (one not overly-ripe banana a day is fine). If you can go three weeks without sugar or sugar substitutes, eating a handful of berries (the one fruit and serving size you should have every day) will taste like the sweetest thing on Earth after 21 days!

Although it might seem like an insurmountable mountain to climb, picture how you will feel 3 weeks from now, knowing that you've reset your palate and won your God-given natural right to be completely satisfied and ecstatic eating foods that taste naturally sweet.
